Final day of NCAA Regionals sends one more to Des Moines
Amanda Murphy knew this was her last chance to make the NCAA Track and Field Championships and surely put on a big performance to ensure her ticket would get punched. (Final Results).
With only the top-12 finishers advancing to Des Moines, Iowa for the NCAA meet, Murphy sat in ninth headed into her final throw. Despite many competitors having huge throws on the day, the Charlo, Mont. native felt confident that this was her time. Her second to last throw of 62.20m (204-01.00) did just the job. Overall, Murphy placed 12th, taking the final spot to extend her season two more weeks.
Murphy's throw not only got her the much-deserved clearance to the NCAA meet, it also marks a new program record. The previous record of 202-07 was set by Ashley Jones back in 2005.
Murphy joins Emily Tyrrell who will compete in the javelin and Jeff Mohl, who earned his berth in the decathlon back at the Big Sky Championships on May 10.
Senior Dan Jackson also competed on Saturday in 5,000 and placed 35th overall with a time of 14:56.26.
"While we had the same number of kids qualify for regionals this year, it was still a great weekend for us," said head coach Dale Kennedy. "A lot of great things happened and most of these kids were able to get some quality experience at this level that will surely help them in the future."
The NCAA Track and Field Championships will take place June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
