Bobcats Tame the Grizzlies

Track and Field able to brave the weather on Senior Day
The day started out snowy and blustery, but it didn't stop the Bobcats from firing on all cylinders at the annual Cat-Griz Dual Meet. (Results)
In the 79th meeting of the men, Montana State bested Montana with a score of 107-76. The Griz still hold a wide margin over the Bobcats, with the series at 54-25 since the 1906 inception of the dual.
For the women, Montana State capitalized on strong performances in the field events and bested the Lady Griz, 98-79, for the 30th meeting of the Bobcats and Grizzlies. The series between the two is now tied at 15 wins apiece since the series began in 1983.
With tough conditions at the Bobcat Track and Field Complex, no Cat-Griz records fell on Saturday, and new Big Sky Championship qualifiers were fairly limited, as well.
“It wasn't just a battle between the two programs, but really a battle with the elements,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “This is a competitive environment no matter what and despite the fact that we may not have seen the results we'd see on a 75 degree day, today did not deter anyone's effort from either team.”
Jacob Kirk was one of three new Big Sky qualifiers, making the mark in the 1,500 with a time of 3:56.41. Kirk is already qualified in the steeplechase and 10,000.
Also in the distance races, Carl Nystuen won the 5,000 to cap off senior day, followed by fellow classmate Seth Grossman. Grossman finished in 15:07.87 and with the altitude adjustment, punched his ticket for the conference championships. Seth Garbett, who came in third, qualified for the 10,000 by meeting a 5,000 standard time of 15:00.87. His time of 15:18.77, with the altitude adjustment give him his first qualifier of the outdoor season.
Nick Melone really braved the day and managed to grab a lifetime best in the 400 hurdles with a time of 54.36 and a second place finish. Maddy Fuchs also put up a great time in the women's 400 hurdle race getting a lifetime best of her own a with 1:00.40 finish.
Despite falling to the Griz in the Women's 4x400 Relay, the quartet of Katie Neimeir, Lierin Flanagan, Chantel Jaeger and Sonia Antar clocked in with a season best time of 3:47.96.
Overall, the Blue and Gold amassed 25 first place finishes to Montana's 11. The men won 15 events to the Griz's three, while the women edged UM, 10-8 in first place performances.
2009 marked the last time both the men and women defeated Montana.
Montana State will face the Griz again, among others, on Friday, May 4, at the Tom Gage Classic in Missoula, Mont. The Tom Gage Classic will serve as a last chance meet before the Big Sky Championships, May 9-12, in Bozeman.
