Track and Field Opens California Weekend With Fast Times, Big Scores

Heather Haug kicks off with a new program record in the steeplechase
Montana State opened up with a strong first day at the Mt. SAC Relays. Six Bobcats competed on Thursday, all putting up fast times and big scores.
Jeff Mohl and Asa Staven competed in the decathlon at Mt. SAC and saw huge improvements from their first outdoor outing in 2012. Mohl placed seventh in his flight with a score of 7,528, marking a lifetime best for the Red Lodge, Mont. native. Mohl's score bumps him up one spot in the Bobcat record book, from third to second all-time. The current record is 7,633, set by Harry Clark back in 1989.
Staven won his division with 7,355, which ranks him fourth all-time in program history, and a lifetime best for him, as well.
In the women's heptathlon, Carley McCutchen posted a lifetime best score of 4,808, and placed 11th overall in the division. Sarah McGree came in just behind her in 12th with 4,756.
Three Bobcats competed in distance races on Thursday evening. Heather Haug set a new school record in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 10:26.36 and placed third in her heat. Haug was the current record holder prior to Thursday, besting her time of 10:34.01 from 2011.
Jake Turner also ran the steeplechase, placing 13th in his heat with a time of 9:14.10.
Carly Nystuen ran the 10K at the CSULA Twilight Open and knocked off 40 seconds to produce a lifetime best performance. His time of 31:01.29 gave him a third place finish in the race.
While not a current student-athlete, assistant coach Lyle Weese earned an Olympic Trials B standard, finishing with a time of 8:40.53 in the steeplechase.
Montana State returns to competition on Friday with more Bobcats competing at Mt. SAC and a group competing at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif.
