Track and Field will look to pick up more qualifiers, prep for Mt. SAC Relays
The Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships are just under a month away and Bobcat Track and Field is prepped to capitalize on another opportunity to get better. Montana State heads to Utah for the Innovation Meet, hosted by Utah and Weber State, April 13-14 in Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah.
Friday's portion of the meet will be held in Salt Lake City at the Utah Spring Classic. Saturday will close out at the Wildcat Outdoor Open in Ogden.
“We will really benefit from this kind of meet format,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “It not only allows the runners to compete in more events, it's also a similar set-up to the upcoming Mt. SAC meet, as well as the conference championships.”
Headed into the weekend, Montana State has 20 women qualified in 16 events, including Heather Haug who has made the mark in five.
Amanda Murphy is coming off yet another banner week in the throws after setting a new personal record in the hammer throw (61.52m), resulting in her second Big Sky Conference Field Athlete of the Week award in 2012. She is currently ranked 10th in the nation in the hammer.
Murphy is also one of three Bobcats who are current leaders in the Big Sky in their respective events. Murphy sits atop the hammer throw rankings, while Amber Amsbaugh has the height to beat in the high jump (1.73m). Senior javelin thrower Emily Tyrrell launched a throw of 48.97m to lead the Big Sky.
The men have 17 men with their tickets punched in 15 events. Twelve of the 17 have earned their mark in at least two events.
Willie Sullivan is one of two men's track and field athletes to have a top ranking in the conference. He leads the men's javelin with 61.56m. Grant Grosvenor, coming off an epic freshman indoor campaign after winning the conference title in the 800, is tied for first in the event with a time of 1:51.36.
Jeff Mohl is ranked second in both the 100 (10.75) and the decathlon (6,622). David Phillips is number two in the shot put (16.47m) and hammer (62.38m).
“We have up to 25 spots per team for the Big Sky meet,” Kennedy said. “This week gives us another chance to fill in the roster, as well improve on the marks we've already set this season.”
Friday's events will begin at 1 p.m. with the hammer throw; while the remainder will start at 4:30 p.m. Saturday is slated for a 10:30 a.m. start in the field and noon for the running events.
