Bobcats look to capitalize on first opportunity for Big Sky marks
Many times the indoor track and field season can be indicator of things to come. Bobcat Track and Field posted one of the most successful seasons in recent history and they are ready to take their talents outside.
Montana State opens the full outdoor season on Saturday, March 31, at the Al Manuel Invitational hosted by Montana in Missoula at Dornblaser Field. Also joining meet host Montana and Montana State will be Big Sky Conference member Eastern Washington. The three teams will go head-to-head in a scored double dual. In addition to the NCAA Division I participants, Carroll, Rocky Mountain and Great Falls will also be in attendance.
The Al Manuel Invite marks the first opportunity for MSU to earn qualifying marks for the Big Sky Championships which will take place May 9-12, in Bozeman.
The hammer throw will mark the season's soft opening, taking place on Friday, March 30. The remainder of events will commence Saturday at 10:45 a.m. with the women's shot put, men's long jump and women's javelin.
“Our outdoor season starts a little later compared to other conference schools but this put us in the best position for our Big Sky meet preparation,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “These kids are chomping at the bit to get out there and compete and start getting their marks. This time of year is always very exciting and we're ready to go.”
MSU returns to Bozeman for their 2012 outdoor home opening beginning Thursday, Apr. 5, at the Montana State Open. The women's heptathlon and men's decathlon will take place on Thursday and finishing on Friday. All track and field events will begin Saturday, April 7, at 11 a.m.
