Two program records yields success for Bobcats
The Big Sky Conference announced the Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Week on Tuesday. Seniors Dan Jackson and Asa Staven took the weekly honors after very impressive performances at the Mountain States Games in Pocatello, Idaho.
Jackson placed second in the 5,000 meter run with an adjusted time of 13:59.05. The previous record was set back in 1991 by Shannon Butler, coincidentally also in Pocatello. Butler clocked in with a time of 14:01.24. Jackson's time also marks a lifetime best for the Bozeman native. He currently ranked seventh in the NCAA in the 5K.
Staven won the heptathlon with a score of 5,691, setting new program record. Teammate Jeff Mohl, set the previous record just a few weeks back on Jan. 10 at the MSU Combined Events Invitational with a mark of 5,521. This is also Staven's second time holding the top place in the record books. The Georgetown, Texas native previously held the record back in 2010 with a score of 5,409. In addition to setting a new program and lifetime best, it also sets a new Big Sky Conference record, which was 5,619 set back in 2006. Staven is currently ranked 11th in the nation in the heptathlon.
