MSU Track and Field gears up for halfway point of indoor slate
Montana State Track and Field opens up day one of the Mountain States Games on Friday, Feb. 3 in Pocatello, Idaho. The two-day meet provides the Bobcats with a chance to prepare and qualify for the Big Sky Championships, taking place Feb. 25-25, in Flagstaff, Ariz.
The open, non-scoring meet will serve as a final chance for the multis athletes to earn their conference marks. After the MSU Combined Events Invitational, Jeff Mohl, currently 12th in the NCAA and Asa Staven punched their ticket to Flagstaff for the heptathlon, but will still look to improve on their marks.
In the women's pentathlon, Carley McCutchen, Sarah McGree and Sadie McMillan have all qualified.
Powhattan Williamson and Kortnee Barrett will look to put together a conference-qualifying performance in order to make their way to the Championships.
Headed into the Mountain States Games, the Bobcats have 25 athletes qualified for the Big Sky Meet (12 men, 13 women). Those already qualified, will look to improve on those marks and also use the meet as a warm-up for the championships.
“This weekend's set up will simulate what it will be like in Flagstaff,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “Many of our kids will have to run over two days between prelims and finals and that will really help us succeed down the road and give us a snapshot of where we fit in with a large portion of the conference at this point of the season.”
A strong slate of teams are scheduled to compete at the Mountain States Games. In addition to the Bobcats and meet host Idaho State; Brigham Young, Carroll, Eastern Washington, Great Falls, Rocky Mountain, Southern Utah, Utah Valley, Weber State and Westminster (Utah) will be in attendance.
