Bobcats picked second, sixth
The Big Sky Conference released the 2013 Indoor Track and Field Preseason coaches' poll on Thursday with the Bobcat Men earning an early second place nod and the Women tied for sixth.
Northern Arizona won the Big Sky Indoor title for the men in 2012 and received 119 total points and nine first-place votes. Montana State tallied 97 points, including two first-place votes. Sacramento State rounds out the top three with 93 votes. The Hornets won the title in 2011.
“Northern Arizona has tremendous depth,” said head coach Dale Kennedy. “And we will continue to work hard to improve and go after that conference title. We have a talented group this year and we look forward to building on last season's success.”
Weber State took the team title in 2012 and barely edged out Sacramento State in the poll with 114 total points and five first-place votes. Sacramento State finished with 113 points and a surprising six first-place nods. Montana State and rival Montana tied with 65 points each for sixth place but Coach Kennedy still has high hopes for the group.
“Sure, it is a little lower than where we'd like to be,” Kennedy said. “But so much can change over the course of the season and it will certainly fuel the fire in competition for us.”
Both the men and women return a solid core of veterans and serious rookie talent headed into the 2013 campaign.
The Bobcats open officially on Jan. 7-8 at the MSU Combined Events Invitational featuring the heptathlon and pentathlon. A full squad returns to action on Friday, Jan. 18, for the Montana State Dual Meet Invitational featuring the Bobcats and Big Sky members Idaho State and Montana.
