2012 season opens with MSU Combined Events Invitational
The Big Sky Conference announced the 2012 Track and Field Preseason Poll on Wednesday, Jan. 4, with the Bobcat Men and Women perched in fourth and sixth place, respectively. Montana State Track and Field will open up the season on Monday, Jan. 9, ready to compete and move up in the rankings.
The Bobcats will host the MSU Combined Events Invitational featuring competitors from Montana State and Montana and the two-day meet will serve as one of two opportunities to earn an NCAA qualifying score. The other chance will come at the Mountain States Games Feb. 3-4 in Pocatello, Idaho.
Returning for the Montana State Men are Asa Staven and Jeff Mohl, who had very strong campaigns in 2011. Staven, a senior, redshirted last indoor season but is coming off a fourth place finish in the outdoor decathlon at the Big Sky Championships last spring.
Jeff Mohl returns after a breakout sophomore season. Mohl placed second in the decathlon in the spring. The Red Lodge, Mont. native was just seven points behind the top spot on the podium and held the lead going into the final event. In the indoor decathlon, he placed third in 2011.
New to the scene is Powhattan Williamson who will be competing in his first collegiate multi. Williamson.
For the women, a veteran crew returns to Worthington Arena in the pentathlon. Sarah McGree finished second at the Big Sky Meet with a lifetime best score of 3,731. Sadie McMillan also competed at the conference meet with a score of 3,418, just shy of her lifetime best of 3,427. Carley McCutchen, was the No. 3 competitor in the women's multis and finished ninth at the Big Sky Meet with a score of 3,330. Kortnee Barrett also returns for her third indoor season. Her lifetime best currently sits at 3,130.
Competing in her first multi at the next level, is Adessa Durglo, who closed out her high school career at St. Ignatius High School (Mont.) as the state champion in the long jump.
The unscored meet will be free of charge for all spectators. Monday's session is slated for a 1 p.m. start and Tuesday will begin at 10:30 a.m.
