MSU reaps rewards from solid Saturday performance at Eastern Washington
Montana State senior Jason Cunningham earned Big Sky Conference and Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS National Player of the Week honors for his record-setting performance on Saturday.
Cunningham nailed five field goals – two from 55 yards – to lead the Bobcats to a 36-21 win at Eastern Washington. Cunningham's school-record five field goals led to 18 points in MSU's first win at Cheney, Wash., since 1990. The Amarillo, Tex., native became the first Bobcat to connect on two kicks of 50 yards or longer in the same game, and he produced three touchbacks on eight kickoffs.
Bobcat defensive end Caleb Schreibeis earned Big Sky Defensive Co-Player of the Week honors for his efforts in slowing Eastern's high-powered offense. Schreibeis shared the team lead with 10 tackles, including three for a loss and two sacks. He also hurried Eagles quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell once.
Montana State held its position in the Sports Network and FCS Coaches Polls this week. MSU remains fourth in both polls, the program's highest ranking since the 1984 national championship season. Sacramento State, the Bobcats' opponent on Saturday, checks in at 25th in both polls.
