For the Montana State volleyball team, the difference between being undefeated and looking for its first win of the season is a mere five points.
Despite dropping its first set against Big Sky Conference-leading Northern Colorado on Saturday night in Butler-Hancock Pavilion, the Bobcats rallied to push the Bears to their limit, eventually falling 25-9, 25-23, 25-23 to UNC.
In three of its six sets this weekend, Montana State (0-12, 0-2) was the first team to 20 points.
Unfortunately, the game is played to 25.
“We competed hard against the top team in the conference,” said fourth-year head coach Sara Schaub. “We need to learn how to close out sets, since we play tough up until the 20-point mark.
“That's when we get timid and inconsistent in our play,” Schaub added.
Northern Colorado (8-4, 2-0) showed its strength in the opening set outhitting MSU .452 to .000.
Despite the slow start, the Bobcats played point-for-point with the Bears in the next two sets.
In the second stanza, Montana State led 20-17 following a Rachelle Allen service ace. UNC closed to within one point, but a Bears service error gave MSU a 21-19 advantage. Northern Colorado rattled off three straight points to take a 22-21 margin, before a Taylar Barney kill knotted the score.
Again, UNC took the lead on a MSU service error before another Barney killed tied the score at 23-all. Northern Colorado notched back-to-back kills to escape with the win.
The third set saw UNC jump to an early 15-9 advantage before the Bobcats went on a 10-4 run to tie the score at 19-all. Following a Kasey Schlatter kill, MSU enjoyed a 22-21 lead. The set was even two more times, before UNC ended the match following two consecutive Bobcat hitting errors.
Senior Chelsea Oemcke paced the Bobcats with a team-high eight kills, while hitting .500 from the field and adding three blocks. Schlatter dished out 20 assists and libero Nicole Baker paced the Bobcats defensively with 14 digs.
After playing its first 12 matches on the road, Montana State will open its home schedule on Friday when it hosts Eastern Washington in Shroyer Gym at 7 p.m.
