Concrete, steel added this week as end zone begins to take shape
Montana State University's end zone expansion project is on task and on time, and according to those supervising the project should take shape over the next couple of weeks.
Martel Construction has poured 670 cubic yards of concrete for the project's foundations by late Monday according to Tony Martel of Martel Construction, the project contractor. That amounts to nearly half the foundation work, and all of the rebar is on site. Two loads of steel arrived in Bozeman on Monday with four more loads expected next week, accounting for 132 of the job's 380 total tons of steel.
George Thompson, MSU's project manager, lauded Martel and its subcontractors, along with the architects and engineers, for their timely work. “The schedule is tight,” Thompson said, “and because of the weather the contractor and subcontractors are pouring concrete, and when it is properly cured erecting steel on top of the footings.”
The main part of the end zone grandstand is being poured in Missoula by Missoula Precast, and is scheduled to begin arriving sometime after May 23. That element of the project amounts to 1,000 cubic yards of concrete, with the largest piece weighing 20,000 lbs.
“It's an exciting point in the project because our fans can really begin to watch the end zone complex take shape,” said MSU Director of Athletics Peter Fields. “Everyone in the design and construction process has worked extremely hard, and the End Zone Project is moving along according to plan in every way, even with the unusual weather we've had this spring. We're looking forward to a great 2011 season and to the excitement of 5,000 additional fans, the new scoreboard, and all the other enhancements to our game day experience.”
In late 2010, more than 700 private donors contributed to the $10 million project, which is using no state funds or tuition dollars. The end zone project is scheduled for completion prior to MSU's home opener on September 10 against UC Davis.
