Montana State senior Rachelle Allen tallied a career-high 22 kills and added seven digs to lift the Bobcat volleyball team to a 23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 16-25, 16-14 win over Weber State to give MSU its first road sweep since the 2001 season, Saturday night in Swenson Gymnasium.
The victory was also MSU's first sweep of the Idaho State-Weber State road swing in Big Sky Conference play.
“Rachelle (Allen) is playing very strong for us right now,” said MSU head coach Sara Schaub. “We may not be winning quickly, but for two nights in-a-row we have fought in every situation to pull out the win in the end.”
Montana State (2-15, 2-5) dropped the opening set despite outhitting Weber State (0-18, 0-6) .290 to .156. MSU then handled the Wildcats in the next two stanzas to take a 2-1 advantage in the match.
WSU responded in the fourth set cruising to the victory behind a .281 attack mark.
In the fifth set, Montana State jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and on four occasions held a five-point margin over Weber State. MSU had two match points at 14-12, but WSU fought back to tie the score at 14-all.
That's when Allen took over with two consecutive kills to give the Bobcats its second straight win.
“We still need to get back in the gym and clean things up,” Schaub said. “But it's really nice to have the pressure of getting that first win off of our backs.”
Also contributing to the Bobcat attack was Sarah Horton, who pounded down 15 kills, while adding nine digs. Setter Jennifer Lundquist dished out 48 assists and Taylar Barney chipped in nine kills and five blocks. Bobcat libero Nicole Baker led MSU with a team-high 19 digs.
Weber State was paced in the loss by Bethany Wray with 22 kills and eight digs.
The Bobcats will host Sacramento State next Saturday in Shroyer Gym.
