McGree, McMillan earn Big Sky qualifying marks in season's first meet
Two Montana State athletes hit qualifying marks for the Big Sky Conference Track and Field Championships in the pentathlon and another leads after day one of the heptathlon at the MSU Combined Events Meet in Bozeman on Monday.
Sarah McGree finished second with 3,446 points, and Sadie McMillan third with 3,427 points, in the pentathlon for MSU. Each qualified for the Big Sky Championships in their first meet of the year. Montana's Lindsey Hall won the event, with 3,882 points.
“It's always nice to see kids get personal bests,” said MSU coach Dale Kennedy. “It's a nice reward. I'm happy for the kids that qualified, and encouraged by Carley McCutchen, who came very close (3,070 points, just shy of the qualifying standard of 3,100 points) in her first pentathlon, so that's a great sign.” Hall's 3,882 points fell just short of the NCAA qualifying mark of 4,075 points.
In the men's heptathlon, MSU's Asa Staven scored 2,912 points in the first four events to grab the day one lead. Montana's Austin Emry (2,872) and MSU's Jeff Mohl (2,842) are just behind Staven. Competitors are chasing the Big Sky qualifying mark of 4,600 points.
