For the second straight game, the Montana State women's basketball team shot over 50 percent from the field, en route to an 84-73 win to snap Sacramento State's seven-game winning streak, Thursday night in Hornet gym.
Senior Erica Perry paced Montana State (14-12, 7-6) with a team-high 18 points on seven-of-10 from the floor. In addition, she added seven assists and four rebounds.
Also posting double-figures for the Bobcats were Sarah Strand 17, Katie Bussey 16 and Lyndi Seidensticker 14.
“Offensively, we are confident with what we are doing,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “On the other side, I thought our defense in the final three-four minutes of the game was excellent and that's what lifted us to the win.”
The Bobcats held the Big Sky's top offense without a field goal in the final 3:31. MSU's defense also limited Sac State to just 24 percent from the floor in the second stanza, as well.
For the game, MSU shot 53 percent from the field, including 58 percent in the first half.
Sacramento State (11-13, 6-5) built a six-point margin in the opening period and held a 46-45 advantage at intermission.
In a game that featured seven ties and 14 lead changes, it was Bussey and Perry who answered down the stretch for MSU. Bussey nailed a three-pointer and followed it by a 12-foot jumper, while Perry's old-fashion three-point play secured the victory.
“Sacramento State isn't an easy place to play this season, and I'm proud of the way we competed,” Binford said. “Sacramento State makes it difficult, but we shot well and got the win.”
The Hornets forced MSU into 22 turnovers, while committing just 14 miscues; however Sacramento State faltered from the line connecting on eight-of-17 tosses.
The Bobcats held a 47-42 edge in rebounding and were paced under the glass by Strand and Rachel Semansky with eight rebounds, apiece.
Charday Hunt led the Hornets in the loss with a game-high 26 points.
Montana State will play at Montana on Feb. 27.
