As of Feb. 13 the Bobcats have played the toughest schedule in the Big Sky. MSU’s schedule is ranked 155, while Weber State is second at 176. All other Big Sky schools are ranked in the 200s...Montana State’s 65 points at Montana on Friday night were the most scored in a non-overtime game for the ‘Cats in Dahlberg Arena since posting 66 points on March 9, 1984.
That Was The Week That Was:
The Bobcats dropped their only game of the week in a 90-65 decision to Montana, Friday night in Missoula. Montana State trailed 41-32 at halftime, and were paced by Whitney Connolly who connected for 13 points in the first stanza. MSU shot 48 percent from the field in the opening period, but gave up nine turnovers and eight offensive rebounds. Montana held a 61-49 lead with 10:35 remaining after MSU’s Anne Phippard made a sweeping left-handed layup. The Bobcats would get no closer. Connolly finished the game with a team-high 16 points, while Alyssa Nelson and Jenny Heringer also recorded double-figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Phippard had her best game as a Bobcat with eight points, a career-best six assists, five rebounds and a steal. For the game, the Bobcats shot 41 percent from the field, 71 percent from three-point range and 88 percent from the free throw line. Montana finished with a 42-35 rebounding edge, which included 21 offensive boards.
Stat of the Week:
As a team, the Bobcats have converted 112-of-143 free throws in Big Sky Conference play, shooting at a 78 percent clip, which ranks them first in league action.
The Scouting Report:
Northern Arizona, as predicted by the coaches and media in the preseason polls, remains atop the Big Sky standings with a 7-2 league mark. The Lumberjacks are 17-7 overall, with its best non-conference win coming on Dec. 19 in an 84-83 victory at Colorado. NAU’s two Big Sky losses have come at the hands of the Bobcats, and last week at Idaho State. Northern Arizona has won nine of its last 11 games. On the season, NAU is paced by the inside presence of Alyssa Wahl and Megan Porter, who average 13.9 and 12.3 points, respectively. Last weekend, the Lumberjacks went 1-1 on its road trip, dropping an 84-71 decision at Idaho State, before notching a 65-53 win at Weber State. On the weekend, NAU was guided by Wahl, a 6-foot-2 junior, who averaged 15 points and 6.5 rebounds in two games.
