“Our middles were in a groove,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “They did a great job terminating the ball. That was one of the best matches I’ve seen Angela have, and Raelene (Purnell) was right with there with her.”
Wiebe, a senior from Winnipeg, Manitoba, also notched a .429 attack mark, while adding five blocks, two aces and two digs. Purnell chipped in 14 kills, a .500 hitting percentage and four digs.
Also in double-figures was Laura Viren with 12 kills. Viren recorded her third consecutive double-double with ten digs.
MSU libero Kandice Kelly posted a team-high 12 digs, while Patti Anderson also reach double-digits with 11 saves. Setters Sarah Allen and Kami Buettner each dished out 23 assists.
“Our backs are up against the wall, and this was a good step forward,” Malauulu said. “We’re taking it one match at a time.”
Montana State (7-14, 3-9) opened the first game with a 19-7 lead and won the set on a Buettner kill. In game two, MSU built a 7-2 lead, before Northern Arizona (8-13, 4-7) rallied to even the match.
In the third stanza, MSU jumped out to a 19-10 advantage following a Wiebe kill. The Bobcats won the game on a Wiebe block. In the final game, Montana State held off a late Lumberjack rally, winning the match on a NAU service error.
Northern Arizona was paced in the loss by Kim Babcock with 20 kills and 12 digs.
