Bobcat players in double-figures as MSU notched a 63-46victory over Cal State Northridge, Sunday afternoon. Also inthe double digits for the Bobcats were Rebecca Alvidrez andAmy Meckling with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
It was an emotional day, said MSU head coach Frank
McCarthy, referring to the last game played by his four seniors
in Worthington Arena. Our seniors have seen the bad and the
good, and I couldn't be happier then to send them out with a
home victory.
Montana State (18-8, 11-4) trailed by two early in the game.
However, the Bobcats reeled off a 17-5 run to take a 24-14
advantage at the 4:38 mark of the first stanza on a Meckling
three-pointer. MSU's Serena Merrill banked in a long
three-pointer at the buzzer and the Bobcats entered intermission with a 30-16 margin.
We held Northridge to five baskets in the first half, McCarthy said. I thought we also did a
nice job on the offensive boards and we forced Northridge into 14 turnovers.
In the second half, the Bobcats built their largest lead of the game at 47-25 on a Jinnifer
Jeresek free throw with 11:31 remaining. However, Cal State Northridge (9-17, 5-9) cut the
margin to 53-41 on a Kristi Rose field goal with five minutes left. MSU responded with an 8-0
run to put the game away 61- 41 on a Serena Merrill field goal with two minutes remaining.
We want to be playing our best basketball of the season, right now, and I think we're doing
that, McCarthy said. We were very balanced and had great production from the perimeter,
as well as inside with our post game.
Blake, a 6-foot-2 forward from Shelley, Idaho, paced the Bobcats with 11 points in the first
half. In the second period, MSU shot 45 percent from the field. MSU was led under the
boards by Isabel Stubbs and Blake with eight and seven rebounds, respectively.
Cal State Northridge was paced by Sha'Tasha Allen with 13 points, while Kristi Rose added
11 points and four rebounds.
Montana State will close out their regular-season schedule at Weber State University onSaturday. A win at WSU would give the Bobcats the No. 2 seed at the Big Sky tournament.
