“Night after night, Maggie Koughan was one of the hardest-working players ever.” –Dr. Ginny Hung, former MSU Athletics Director
Former Montana State Athletics Director Ginny Hunt and current Eastern Washington Interim Athletic Director Pam Parks have seen thousands of female student-athletes during their tenure in collegiate athletics.
For over 15 years, Hunt guided the MSU women’s athletics program, while Parks served as head coach and an assistant coach with the Bobcat volleyball program, before moving on to EWU.
Both will tell you that no one student-athlete maximized their skill more than Maggie Koughan.
“Night-after-night Maggie Koughan was one of the hardest working players, ever,” Hunt said. “She was very consistent with her play and was a steady competitor.”
A native of Woodinville, Wash., Koughan earned a starting spot as a freshman and never relinquished her role. She ended her career with 1,328 career kills, which is third best in MSU history. In addition, Koughan possessed the program’s “nastiest” serve, and her total of 220 career service aces remains the top mark at Montana State.
According to Parks, if you saw Koughan walking down the street, you wouldn’t have guessed she was a collegiate athlete. And yet, Koughan went on to become a three-time all-conference performer and MSU’s pick for the Big Sky Conference All-Decade team.
“Maggie was a great player on some very good teams,” Hunt said.
And now, her legacy will forever be etched in the annuals of Bobcat Athletic Athletics.
