Kim Steffel was a jack-of-all-trades
She played every position on the volleyball court during her time at Montana State, and she played them extremely well.
A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Steffel grace the volleyball hardwood from 1989-92. During that time, she rewrote the Montana State record books. And, even though 15 years have passed, her name remains among MSU’s top ten in numerous categories.
“Kim was such an intelligent player,” said former Bobcat head coach Donna Palivec, who coached Steffel at Montana State. “She was heads-and-tails our best player, but she was jus so humble about her ability. For Kim, it was all about the team.”
Steffel ended her career as MSU’s leader in digs and blocks. Her name is still listen among the top ten in kills, total attacks, hitting percentage, service aces digs and block.
And, while the Bobcats struggled in the early ‘90s, Steffel sill shined among the best in the Northwest Region.
For her efforts, she was named to the 1992 American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Northwest Region, Second-Team – the highest honor ever bestowed upon a bobcat volleyball player.
Being named to the team was a huge accomplishment considering she appeared nest to former Olympians and NCAA national champions.
“Kim saw the court so well and had a great sense for the game,” Palivec said. “She played bigger than she was, and could jump out of the gym.”
For Steffel, things came easy for her on the court, and she was rewarded off the court, as well. Steffell earned All-Big Sky Second-Team honors in 1990 and 1991, and was an All-Big Sky First-Team selection in 1992.
She is only one of two Bobcats to be named to the All-Big Sky Conference first or second team in three consecutive seasons (the other is Meegan Zanto).
“All the positions I played really helped mold me into the person I am today,” Steffel said. “I learned a lot about character and being a good teammate. Even today, I teach my athletes about the game and life itself. Those are the lessons I learned while at Montana State.”
Currently, Steffel serves as the Finance manager at Concordia Academy in Minnesota. Ironically, she honed her skills at Concordia Academy as a prepster leading the Beacons to the 1987 state title. Steffel is married to George Duis.
