Social Media
Keep in mind that NCAA and team rule violations may revealed through social media. Student-athletes are not allowed to use social media to endorse commercial products, businesses or events. Doing so will jeopardize their eligibility to compete.
Student-athletes also should not use social media to comment about recruits or their visits to MSU. Verbal commitments are common, but do not lift the restriction on publicizing about a recruit. Recruitment of a prospect is to remain unpublicized by MSU coaches, staff, and student-athletes until that prospect signs a National Letter of Intent or an MSU financial aid agreement or an MSU offer of admission. Such publication includes posting on the prospect’s Facebook wall or Twitter feed for all to see, and posting about or posting pictures of a prospect’s visit (official or unofficial).
It is permissible for coaches and student-athletes to have private social media conversations with recruits (ie, Facebook message, Twitter direct message). Student-athletes should not engage in the solicitation of prospects to come to Montana State at the direction of the coaches. If a prior relationship exists with a recruit, it is permissible to communicate with them, but it must remain private.
Montana State Athletics has both a Staff Social Media Policy as well as a Student-Athlete Social Media Code of Conduct available for review through ARMS.
