Quotes from 2013 Big Sky Indoor Championships
DISTANCE MEDLEY RELAY
Cristian Soratos, anchor leg, Montana State: “I sat on him for 200 meters and I kind of clipped him twice and I was getting eager, like when do I go, when do I go? I was really comfortable through that whole entire thing, when I was behind him and even catching up, and I knew when I passed him I had to pass him hard. I couldn’t waste time slowly going by him. We thought we’d be closer after that first leg, Jacob Kirk did a lot of work in that 800 to close the gap. I saw him closing and closing, and when he got closer to handing the baton to me I got excited. I knew we were closing ground on NAU.”
MEN’S HIGH JUMP
Trevor Evanson, Northern Colorado: “I was looking at the web site before the meet and I see this kid going 7-3. I didn’t think I could get him. But I stepped up my game, and I got him.”
MEN’S LONG JUMP
Cylor Morgan, Weber State: “I knew right when I hit it that it was a great jump even though I took off way behind the board.”
MEN’S 5000
Matt McElroy, Northern Arizona: “Coming into the race, I think my head wasn’t as straight as I wanted it to be. I got sick last week, I was out for four days with the flu, I lost five pounds. I couldn’t even compete our last workout, so I came into it a little unconfident and didn’t really know what I had.”
MEN’S HEPTATHLON
Jeff Mohl, Montana State: “I’m so happy about (the one-two finish with teammate Pow Williamson). That’s a great start for our team. We got 18 points, we were supposed to get 14. That’s the third time we’ve swept the multis one-two (in 2013), so that’s great.” On his effort on Saturday, including his personal best in the pole vault: “It was really consistent. That was a two-height PR for the multi (in the pole vault). I’ve jumped that height before in the pole vault, but that was the first time I’ve jumped it in the multi. The hurdles and the 55 (meters) I was a little disappointed, but other than that I was good.” On missing his first jump of Friday’s multi-event pole vault: “That was a pretty high-pressure second attempt. But usually I have a little bit of a rocky start, so that’s OK. I was expecting to miss one, because I was waiting (to jump) for two hours.”
WOMEN’S WEIGHT THROW
Erinn Jones, Sacramento State: “I didn’t even hear (it was) a stadium record. I was just trying to stay consistent and do what I could do for our team.” On trailing entering the finals: “I knew (there were) little things I had to fix, so I was just focusing on one thing at a time and trying not to let the atmosphere overwhelm me. (I was) trying to stay level-headed.”
WOMEN’S POLE VAULT
Catlin Maulin, Idaho State: “I actually felt really terrible in warmups, but somehow I figured it out. I just got really excited that I was competing and pulled it all together. I jumped exactly the same as I have all season, so it really just depended on how everyone else handled it.”
WOMEN’S LONG JUMP
Sakya Bolton, Sacramento State: “I just had to get my steps down right, they weren’t quite there in my first three jumps. I kind of had to stop thinking about everything else, ran down, popped it off. When I got out I felt like my run was good, I felt like I did my run right. I knew it was a good jump, but I didn’t know it was 19-feet.”
