Bobcats Fall to Bears in Colorado

GREELEY, Colo. – The Montana State volleyball team recorded its first loss of the conference season on Saturday, falling in three sets to Northern Colorado. The Bobcats (8-5) were downed by the Bears (6-7) after a slow start to the match proved to be too much to overcome for MSU.Â
"I think this is a hard place to play, and they play quite well on their home court," head coach Matt Houk said. "That will be the growth we're looking for, to go face these teams in our conference that have success and win on their home court and come out with a win. We're talented enough to do that but need to learn how to preform to our capabilities in these tough road matches."Â
Montana State won the opening point of the match but were not able to muster momentum and UNC moved ahead to a 19-15 lead. The Bobcats strung together a late rally up to 21 points, but the Bears were first to 25, sealing the score. Set No. 2 fell in a similar fashion, as UNC jumped to an early lead, allowing only 16 points from MSU.Â
The final set was the most productive for the Bobcats, who traded the score back and forth to ta tie at 17. UNC pulled ahead to 24-20, and Montana State rallied through four set points, but ultimately fell 25-23.Â
"I'm stoked about the way that we came out in set three and gave ourselves a real chance to push that match," Houk said. "Obviously we need to start out the way that we finished. I was happy with the blocks towards the end, but perhaps the tale of the tape is that we got outkilled by 10 balls."
Karli Heidemann propelled Montana State's offense, reaching double-digit kills for the sixth time this season. Nicolette Noble recorded 18 digs, while Lauren Greeny tallied nine digs and a pair of kills. As a team, the Bobcats out blocked the Bears 8-6, with Lauren Schloe leading the team with four and Joelie Spelts recording three.Â
Montana State returns to Bozeman on Oct. 1 for a matchup with Idaho, before hosting Eastern Washington on Oct. 3. Single-match and season tickets for MSU home games are available now. Â
