MSU falls to Jackrabbits in Gold Rush
BOZEMAN, Mont. (Sept. 6, 2025) – South Dakota State stopped Montana State on a fourth-and-one in overtime to earn a 30-24 double-overtime win in MSU's Gold Rush home opener on Saturday.
The second-ranked Jackrabbits and No. 3 Montana State fought to a 17-17 decision after four quarters of play in a game that each team capitalize on a botched punt by the other, with two turnovers by each squad. The game was tied at 10 at halftime, and each team scored a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Adam Jones scored on a two-yard run in the first overtime, and the Jackrabbits answered in their possession. SDSU scored on a 25-yard pass from Chase Mason to Braden Delahoyde in the first possession of the second overtime, then stopped MSU running back Julius Lloyd on the ensuing possession.
"It ultimately comes down to a fourth and one that we don't get," Vigen said. There were so many plays throughout, offense, defense special teams, that didn't allow us to really ever gain the momentum to create some separation. And I think there were opportunities. We just didn't get it done, and I know a fair amount of credit certainly would go to South Dakota State."
SDSU quarterback Chase Mason threw for 190 yards and three touchdowns (17-25 passing), with Lofton O'Groske catching a dozen passes for 141 yards. Julius Loughridge gained 83 yards on 23 carries.
Justin Lamson threw for 123 yards on 18-28 passing, and rushed for 96 yards on 20 carries. "Looking at rushing numbers, Justin scrambling around was probably our best offense," Vigen said, "and that's an element of the passing game when they cover and they drop out, but ultimately, from just a pure efficiency (standpoint) in our consistency in the passing game, it wasn't good enough tonight."
The win raises South Dakota State's record to 2-0 on the season, with both victories against nationally-ranked FCS opponents. The Bobcats fall to 0-2 for the first time since 2017, when the team also lost at a nationally-ranked FBS opponent in week one before falling to SDSU in the home opener a week later.
Montana State hosts San Diego next Saturday at 1 pm.
