Jason Lamson threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns in just three quarters of action to lead Montana State to a 57-3 Homecoming win over Eastern Washington on Saturday afternoon in Bozeman.
The fourth-ranked Bobcats were never challenged in the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams.
The Bobcats (3-2, 1-0) jumped out of the gates in the opening quarter, exploding to a 24-0 lead. The first touchdown, an Adam Jones crushing run up the middle behind blocks by Hunter Provience and Cedric Jefferson, was set up by a 25-yard pass from Lamson to Chris Long, a senior transfer from Rutgers.
After stopping EWU on fourth down, Lamson found Provience on a crossing pattern and 43 yards later MSU led 14-0. Lamson started the game with five consecutive completions. On MSU's very next play, after Hunter Parsons sacked EWU quarterback Nate Bell for a 14-yard loss, Lamson found Taco Dowler down the left sideline for a 45-yard touchdown.
Before the first quarter was over, Myles Sansted booted a 43-yard field goal. After one quarter, MSU led 24-0 and EWU had run 17 plays for a total of negative 1 yards.
There was not as much scoring in the second quarter. Soren McKee kicked a field goal for the Eagles (1-4, 0-1). Finally, just before the half ended, Lamson found Jabez Woods for a 28-yard score in the left front corner of the end zone. That play was setup by a 12-yard pass to Dowler over the middle.
MSU totaled 300 yards in the first half with 251 coming through air. EWU gained just 67 yards on 35 plays.
It was more of the same in the second half except the Bobcats ran the ball at will instead of passing it with ease. After totaling 49 yards on the ground in the first two quarters, MSU ran for 244 in the second half.
The ground attack started in the third quarter when the Bobcats faked a field goal and holder Colby Frokjer dashed 26 yards behind the block of Braden Zimmer giving the Bobcats a 36-3 advantage. Moments later, Jones reeled off his longest run of the season as Provience and fellow tight end Rylan Schlepp sealed the right side and Jones dashed 37 yards for a score. Jones led all runners with 72 yards on 10 carries scoring in his fifth straight game.
Leading 43-3, Bobcat defensive back Jhase McMillan recovered an Eagle fumble. From there Colson Coon took the ball 54 yards to the 1. On the next play, Coon plowed in to make it 50-3 late in the third quarter.
Finally, in the fourth quarter, sophomore quarterback Chance Wilson kept the ball around left side dashing untouched into the end zone from 32 yards out.
Overall, MSU won its third in a row by totaling 580 yards in front of 22,277 happy fans while holding EWU to just 207 yards. Lamson's favorite pass targets were Dowler and Dane Steel with three receptions each.
MSU's defense was led by Bryce Grebe, Cole Taylor and Colter Petre all with five tackles.
After four games in Bozeman in September, MSU travels to Northern Arizona this week before returning home on Oct. 11 against Idaho State. EWU plays host to Portland State this week.
