Updated document serves as road map to future of Bobcat Athletics facilties
BOZEMAN, Mont. (Oct. 24, 2025) – Leon Costello doesn't see Montana State University's updated Bobcat Facilities Master Plan as a starting point or a new document. He sees it as a continuation.
"The dedication and hard work of many people have helped us reshape our facilities in a way that benefit all of our student-athletes over the last nine years," Montana State's Director of Athletics said. "This update provides us a road map to continue the progress we've made."
The core of the 2025 Athletic Master Plan offers improvement projects to Brick Breeden Fieldhouse, Shroyer Gym, the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center, Bobcat Stadium, and the Bobcat Track and Field Complex. Enhancements include additions and upgrades to all areas that impact student-athlete performance and wellness, along with amenities that improve fan experience.
"Our primary goal is to continue creating opportunities for our student-athletes to become champions on and off the field by optimizing their performance and experience at Montana State University," said Costello, who engineered his first Facilities Master Plan shortly after arriving at MSU in 2016. "Improved facilities, including spaces that meet the changing needs of today's student athletes remain an essential piece of this process."
The Emerging Projects portion of the plan includes improvements to each of Bobcat Athletics' existing facilities that:
* Enhance Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and Shroyer Gym infrastructure to address evolving student-athlete needs and amenities to improve fan enjoyment of Bobcat events.
* An expansion of the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center featuring two additional indoor tennis courts, viewing areas for spectators, new locker and team areas, and the possibility of future expansion to include support of the MSU Golf and Ski programs.
* Potential development of Dyche Field, the former football practice area and long-ago baseball diamond, to offer an outdoor tennis venue with upgraded courts and seating for training and competition for the Bobcat programs and MSU and Bozeman communities. The area also allows for the potential of a new athletic administration and performance building to support the continued growth of the athletic department and it's programs.
* A comprehensive Bobcat Stadium expansion including increased seating capacity to meet today's demands and improved fan amenities to elevate fan experience and the overall functionality of the stadium and surrounding footprint.
* Additions of permanent office, locker, storage and concession facilities at the Bobcat Track and Field Complex to create space for operations, coaching, and administrative efforts, and improved training and competition areas.
The wave of facility improvements and additions during Costello's first decade leading Bobcat Athletics initiated one of the most successful eras in program history. Each of MSU's varsity athletic programs advanced to post-season competition during that time, with 12 of the programs capturing team or individual championships. The Bobcats have won more conference championships, qualified for more NCAA Championships and earned more all-Americans than any other time in their storied history.
Those accomplishments extend a historical trend at Montana State emphasizing the importance of facility additions and enhancements to competitive success. The addition of what became known as Romney Gym, permanent Gatton Field, Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and the many iterations of Reno H. Sales and Bobcat Stadium each produced championship-winning teams within the first few years of their development.
Costello said the Master Plan, in addition to reimagining the space available within the Bobcat Athletics footprint, ignites the process of working toward the goal of creating those enhancements. "Facility enhancements are rooted in our vision to create a first-class student-athlete experience dedicated to academic success, competitive excellence, and personal development. Our student-athletes remain committed to that process, and so have this program's stakeholders."
Disclaimer: The plan contains concepts that create the foundation for improvements. All opportunities in this plan may and in many cases will change from the original concepts based on a variety of factors, including budget.
