“It was a great start with the doubles point,” said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. “We knew we needed to take control of the net. We executed and found all the middle balls in the big moments. It was good for us to get the point against a great team.”
Montana State opened its match at Cal Poly with its strength- doubles- winning the first point of the contest with victories at Nos. 1 and 2, but it wasn't enough as the Mustangs stormed back taking all six singles matches in a 6-1 decision over the Bobcats on Friday afternoon.
"It was a great start with the doubles point," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "We knew we needed to take control of the net. We executed and found all the middle balls in the big moments. It was good for us to get the point against a great team."
Montana State's (1-2) 1-0 advantage was short lived as Cal Poly opened at No. 6 singles as Sarah MacCullum posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Mia Ljubas. Cal Poly (2-1) took a 2-1 lead moments later with a victory at No. 4 singles. MSU's Andrea Cuquerella dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Natalie Lynch at No. 5, before Alexandra Ozerets clinched the match for the Mustangs with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Hudson Hawkins at No. 3 singles.
"In singles, Cal Poly won the most important points," Woodburn said. "We had opportunities but needed to play with more margins.
"It's all about learning at this time of the season and continually improving," she added. "We will be ready to respond against Santa Clara."
