Montana State outblocked the Sun Devils 10-5 as Gustafson recorded five blocks, while Spelts and Jordan Radick added four each.
No. 14 Arizona State outhit Montana State .320 to .032 and fought off a strong Montana State effort in the second set to post a 25-12, 25-23, 25-12 win over the Bobcats in the Webb-Burbridge Classic hosted by ASU at Desert Financial Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Arizona State (11-1) opened the contest taking an early 8-3 lead. Montana State (2-9) answered with a 6-3 run to close the gap to 11-9 on a Madilyn Siebler kill. The Sun Devils quickly turned the table with six unanswered points and took the set on a kill by Savanah Kjolhedek.
The Bobcats held a 14-12 advantage in the second frame on a Camryn Greenwald kill. The set featured eleven ties and six lead changes. MSU held a 22-21 lead following an Erika Gustafson kill, but Arizona State rattled off a 4-1 run taking the set on another Kjolhedek.
The Sun Devils flexed their muscles in the final set outhitting the Bobcats .455 to -.172.
"It was a two-fold lesson," said MSU head coach Matt Houk. "The take-away is that against top 25 teams we're every bit as good for periods of time. What we need to learn is how to sustain that level over the course of a match.
"We were very deliberate with our non-conference schedule," Houk added. "Losing nine matches is a tough pill to swallow and it doesn't feel very good, but the hope is that we can apply the things we've learned now instead of during the heat of the Big Sky season in November."
Siebler paced MSU with seven kills, while Gustafson, Jourdain Kamps, and Joelie Spelts added four apiece. Montana State outblocked the Sun Devils 10-5 as Gustafson recorded five blocks, while Spelts and Jordan Radick added four each.
Lauren Lindsey guided MSU defensively with eight digs. For her efforts over the weekend, Lindseth, a junior libero from Great Falls, was named to the all-tournament team.
