Tommy Mellott becomes third-year captain
BOZEMAN, Montana – Brent Vigen introduced trio of returning captains and three newcomers to the role as Montana State's 2024 teams to their teammates after practice on Wednesday.
Defensive end Brody Grebe from Melstone, Butte's Tommy Mellott, the third-year starting quarterback, and linebacker Danny Uluilakepa return as team captains after serving in that role during the 2023 season. Mellott was also a team captain as a sophomore in 2023, his first full season as the team's signal caller. Joining those three are safety Rylan Ortt from Missoula, center Justus Perkins from Bozeman, and offensive tackle Marcus Wehr of Billings.
The 2024 season marks the fifth time in the last six years (counting 2020, when captains were elected before MSU's season was cancelled) that at least one team captain returned from the previous campaign. Below are notes on each 2024 Bobcat captain:
Brody Grebe, DE, Melstone – Grebe remains the only Bobcat captain from Melstone… he joins his former teammate Amandre Williams (2021) and Derek Marks (2019) as the only defensive ends elected captain since 2013…
Tommy Mellott, QB, Butte – Joins Troy Andersen (2019-21) and Fred Ervin (1900-02) as Montana State's three-year team captains, and
The 11th Bobcat from Butte to serve as a team captain (Ray Becky, 1968; Bill Boston, 1948; Neil Brooks, 1946; Gary Carle, 1965; Bert Markovich, 1976; Jon McElroy, 1968; Bill Mulcahy, 1962; Fred Turner, 1962)... the 11th quarterback since 1946 to serve as team captain... the first sophomore since DeNarius McGhee in 2011 elected captain.
Rylan Ortt, S, Missoula – Becomes MSU's first team captain from Missoula since Dylan Tripp in 1997 (joining Joe Roberts in 1984, Tom Marinan in 1965, and Jay Duquette in 1916)…
Justus Perkins, C, Bozeman – The seventh center elected captain at MSU in the last 50 years… the 11th Bobcat captain from Bozeman, and the first since Dane Fletcher in 2009… Perkins joins Shaun Sampson, Jim Verlanic and Bert Markovich as in-state centers elected captain.. out for the first portion of the season with an injury suffered late in preseason camp
Danny Uluilakepa, LB, Puyallup, Washington – Joins Troy Andersen, Mac Bignell and Na'a Moeakiola as linebackers to repeat as teams captains at MSU… of the 15 multi-year captains in Bobcat history, Uluilakepa is one of eight from outside of Montana
