BOZEMAN, Montana – Two Montana State seniors landed on the Walter Payton Watch List to open the 2024 season, Stats Perform announced on Tuesday.
Quarterback Tommy Mellott and offensive lineman Marcus Wehr rank among the 35 players that enter the new season as the top contenders for the Walter Payton Award, presented to the top offensive player in Division I FCS football. Wehr returns as a consensus All-America this season, while Mellott is a two-time second team All-Big Sky choice who won the Doris Robinson Scholar Athlete Award Presented by Fed Ex Ground last season, given to the top student-athlete in the FCS based on performance on the field, in the classroom and in community service.
Wehr, from Billings, earned consensus First Team All-America honors as a junior in 2024, with PFF ranking him among the best offensive tackles in all of Division I football. He anchored the Big Sky's top rushing and scoring offense. Mellott enters his senior year with 5,715 career total offense yards and is in MSU's top 10 in career rushing and career passing yards.
The Walter Payton Award is in its 38th season, named for the legendary running back who played college football at Jackson State and professional for the Chicago Bears. All 13 FCS conferences are represented on this year's initial Watch List.
