CATS IN CAMP DAY #3: Bobcats Take 'Another Step Forward' After Donning Shoulder Pads

Evaluation of quarterbacks continues
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State entered another phase of its preseason football camp Sunday, and while Bobcat coach Brent Vigen called it "another step forward" the team's third practice came in unusual circumstances.
In addition to donning shoulder pads for the first time, MSU practiced late on Sunday afternoon after going in the morning the first two days. "You change the routine up a little bit," Vigen said, "you go in the afternoon, we typically don't practice on Sunday but because of the sequencing of starting on a Friday we did. It'll be good to look at the film."
Vigen said the team's pace of scheme installation outstripped its execution on Sunday. "There was more in, more movement on the defensive side," he said. It probably wasn't as crisp."

Montana State's starting quarterback spot may be locked down, but the competition to play behind third-year starter Tommy Mellott continues to draw attention.
The early days of preseason camp offer many opportunities for looks at all five quarterbacks, said Bobcat coach Brent Vigen. "You take every opportunity to evaluate. That position in particular is one that has to learn by doing, learn by making mistakes and seeing things. When you put 11 guys out there beyond the seven-on-seven nature,, and reacting to what that rush in front of you is doing. A lot goes into it, but you want to see progress. That's as simple as I can put it. And what I've seen, they're seeing things better every day."
Sophomore Jordan Reed enters his third year in the program, and is the only quarterback behind Mellott on the depth chart with significant game experience. Redshirt freshmen Chance Wilson and Patrick Duchien are joined by new freshman Daveon Superales in the competition.
