MSU had four freshmen -Dougherty, Bean, Meg McCarty, Hudson Hawkins- playing in its six-person ladder.
Portland opened with victories at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to earn the first point of the match, en route to a 7-0 win over Montana State on Friday afternoon at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
The Pilots followed with wins at the top three spots to clinch the match as Sally Pethybridge held off Bobcat freshman Paula Dougherty 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4. The match was one of two that went three sets. MSU's Angel Bean forced a third set at No. 4 before eventually falling to Aleksandra Dimitrijevic 7-6(6), 3-6, 10-8.
"Portland is a tough team and a very solid program," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "I thought we fought and competed well in all six singles matches, which included four sets that went to tiebreakers.
"We didn't' get the win but it was a great learning experience for this young team," Woodburn added. "We'll look to rebound tomorrow against Portland State."
