Montana State's Tommy Mellott named Phil Steele FCS Offensive Player of the Year
BOZEMAN, Montana – Bobcat fans have understood Tommy Sullivan's brilliant consistency for four seasons, but Montana State's senior long snapper was acknowledged by a much wider audience Friday when he and 10 of his teammates earned All-America plaudits from a pair of organizations.
Sullivan and senior linebacker McCade O'Reilly became first-time All-Americas when Phil Steele lauded 10 Bobcats, Sullivan as the second team long snapper and O'Reilly as a third team linebacker Notably, that publication selected senior quarterback Tommy Mellott as FCS Offensive Player of the Year and 1st Team All-America quarterback.
Mellott and offensive guard Marcus Wehr each landed on the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) first team as well, leaving both as unanimous All-Americas to this point (signifying selection to the first team by each organization). The AFCA team honored Sullivan as 1st Team All-America, and offensive tackle Conner Moore and defensive end Brody Grebe as 2nd Team All-Americas.
While the coaches only chose two teams, Phil Steele extended to four teams. With Grebe joining Mellott and Wehr on the first team and Sullivan a second teamer, O'Reilly and punt returner Taco Dowler landed on the third team. Running back Scottre Humphrey and Moore were chosen on the fourth team. Additionally, running back Adam Jones (1st Team) and kicker Myles Sansted (4th Team) joined Phil Steel's Freshman All-America teams.
O'Reilly made his selection a family affair, joining older brother Callahan as All-America Bobcat linebackers. Wehr is the only two-time 1st Team All-America offensive lineman in Bobcat history, although Sonny Holland was a first team selection playing both center and linebacker during football's single-platoon era.
