Five different Bobcats found the end zone on Saturday, as Montana State scored a team record seven touchdowns on the ground in a 49-7 rout of Sacramento State. Along the way, MSU ran its record to 10-0 for the first time in history.
Under clear skies with a skiff of snow high in the distant Bridger Mountains, the second-ranked Bobcats (6-0 in the Big Sky Conference) found the end zone on their first drive as Ty McCullouch took an end-around 64 yards. The entire right side of the MSU offensive line pushed the Hornets down the field and Adam Jones supplied a key block downfield to spring McCullouch.
Before the first quarter ended, Tommy Mellott scored from 14 yards out, this time Rohan Jones and Ryan Lonergan helped spring the senior quarterback as 21,987 fans looked on. It was MSU's 25th straight sellout.
Julius Davis, playing in just his second game of the season due to an offseason knee injury, scored in the second quarter on a 5-yard scamper. That touchdown was set up on a 48-yard dash by Scottre Humphrey. The halftime score was 28-0 after Mellott scored his 10th touchdown of the season. That score was set up on a key fourth down pass from Mellott to Rohan Jones. It was Jones and Lonergan who contributed key blocks on Mellott's second score. For the game, Mellott complete 7 of 10 passes for 89 yards.
Sac State's chance for a score late in the first half ended with a Jon Johnson interception in the end zone. It was Johnson's first pick of the season as a blitzing Rylan Ortt caused the errant throw.
The Bobcats kept on rolling in the third quarter. Adam Jones raced 78 yards to set up a 3-yard score by Humphrey and Jones then made it 42-0 with a 57-yard dash of his own, getting a downfield block from Jacob Trimble.
For the game, Jones finished with 159 yards rushing on just five carries. Humphrey added 132 yards on 12 attempts. All in all, MSU totaled a Bobcat Stadium record 508 yards on the ground, second most rushing yards in team history.
Curron Borders scored for Sac State before MSU's Davis reached the end zone via the ground in the fourth quarter.
The Bobcats totaled 604 yards to 255 for the Hornets (3-7, 1-5). The previous stadium record for rushing yards was 483 and came against Fresno State in 1973. In that game, the Bobcats rushed the ball a record 78 times. This time, the rushing yardage record fell on just 51 carries.
This week the Bobcats travel to face a tough UC Davis team while the Hornets visit Cal Poly.
Kenneth Eiden and Simeon Woodward sparked the MSU defense with a quarterback sack apiece. The Bobcats defense was without All-American Brody Grebe who missed the game with a leg injury.
