The redshirt junior from Belen Heredia, Costa Rica, picks up fourth career weekly honor following fourth career tournament win
FARMINGTON, Utah – After a record-breaking performance on the biggest stage of the fall, Scarlet Weidig was named Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Weidig came away with a thrilling individual win as the champion of the Big Sky '54 for IX' tournament, proving she was the class of the 87-competitior field with a 9-under par 54-hole score of 207.
The mark is the new Montana State record for an individual, and reflects what was an incredible two days of golf for the native of Belen Heredia, Costa Rica, who shot 67-69-71 over two rounds on Monday and one round on Tuesday.
Weidig led the competition after two rounds with a mark of 8-under, but trailed by two strokes heading into the 13th hole of the final round. With birdies on 13, 15, and 16, she surged in front and held on for a tight victory over Northern Arizona's Amy Hodgkins and Southern Utah's Natcharee Thanchitnithanya.
The tournament win was the fourth in Weidig's decorated career as a Bobcat, moving her into second place all-time in MSU's record book behind Jen McGregor, who won five between 1993 and 1997. The Big Sky Golfer of the Week honor is also the fourth for Weidig, who won it on three occasions last year (September 21, September 28, March 3).
Weidig's round of 67 on Monday morning tied the program record, with five birdies and no bogeys making for a remarkable scorecard. The redshirt junior was one of four Bobcats to finish below par in the opening round, another program record, as MSU broke the 18-hole low team score with a 12-under par 276.
Montana State finished third at the tournament, which featured 13 other teams including all nine other Big Sky opponents at TalonsCove Golf Club in Saratoga Springs, Utah.
MSU broke records for 18-hole team score (276), 36-hole team score (571), and 54-hole team score (869).
The Bobcats will have a short turnaround, leaving this upcoming weekend to compete at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational, hosted by Seattle University at Tacoma Country Club in Tacoma, Washington. The tournament begins Monday, October 2, and continues through Tuesday, October 3.
