35 Standouts Named to 2023 Walter Payton Award Watch List | The Analyst
35 Standouts Nominated to 2023 Buck Buchanan Award Watch List | The Analyst
BOZEMAN, Montana – Quarterback Tommy Mellott and defensive tackle Sebastian Valdez, a pair of Montana State juniors, landed on watch lists for the Stats Perform FCS national awards this week, the organization announced.
Mellott enters 2023 as one of 35 players on the preseason watch list for the Stats Perform Walter Payton Award Presented by FedEx Ground, presented to the top offensive player in the FCS. He rushed for 1,068 yards and threw for 1,698 as a sophomore in 2022, leading the Cats to a 12-2 record, a Big Sky Championship, and a trip to the FCS Semifinals while earning 2nd Team All-Big Sky honors. He is one of 17 quarterbacks on the list, including two others from the Big Sky Conference. In all, five players from Big Sky schools enter the season on the Payton list.
Valdez, on the list for the Stats Perform Buck Buchanan Award Presented by FedEx Ground, turned in a tremendous sophomore season a year ago, rolling up 10 tackles-for-loss which included 7.5 sacks. The 1st Team All-Big Sky selection, Valdez led the Big Sky's top-ranked rushing defense. Among the 35 players on the preseason Buchanan list, Valdez is one of 14 defensive linemen and one of six from the Big Sky Conference.

More players can join these watch lists during the regular season before a national media panel selects the winner from a group of finalists. First awarded in 1995, the Buchanan includes past recipients such as Dexter Coakley, Rashean Mathis, Jared Allen and Arthur Moats.
This season, the Walter Payton Award (FCS offensive player of the year), Buck Buchanan Award (FCS defensive player of the year), Jerry Rice Award (FCS freshman player of the year), Eddie Robinson Award (FCS coach of the year) and FedEx Ground Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be presented at the national awards banquet on the eve of the FCS championship game in Frisco, Texas.
