Montana State welcomed its new volleyball coach on Wednesday. Read what Coach Houk and Director of Athletics Leon Costello had to say at Wednesday's gathering.
Opening statements from Wednesday's press conference welcoming new volleyball head coach Matt Houk:
Leon Costello, Director of Athletics:
"In designing the process of hiring our next head volleyball coach it was important for me to be inclusive and thorough. We wanted to explore every possible avenue of attracting the best coach for our volleyball program. It was important to me and to the committee the process was thorough, and the pool of candidates was impressive. However, when it came to selecting our next head coach, I was looking for the following qualities: I wanted someone that had run their own program and had had head coaching experience; I wanted somebody that was coming from highly successful results and experiences; I wanted someone who had excellence in recruiting and on-the-court skill development and a strong background in building positive team culture. Our new coach checks the box in all of those areas. Our new head coach comes to MSU as a highly regarded teacher of the game and has built his coaching career with hard work, strong relationships, and values he learned from his family and coaching mentors. My goal throughout this process was to find a head coach that would develop champions in the classroom, competition and prepare student-athletes for the next stages of their life. Our next head coach will help us do just that. I'm excited to introduce our new head coach, Mr. Matt Houk."
Matt Houk, Bobcat Head Volleyball Coach:
"Right away when I landed, it felt like a no-brainer if they gave me an opportunity to come here. I've been doing this for 20-years and I've been at a few places and the thing that stood out is people matter. And so, when I decided I was going to start doing the search the biggest thing I was looking for was the right people. A place where I thought I could be authentic and guide young people find their authentic voices and try to become the best versions of themselves, during this process. These years are hard, 18 to 22, super formative, we're out on our own for the first time trying to figure out who we are, what we stand for, and we're doing that in the spotlight of the arena with people coming and watching us, judging us, and posting about us on social media, it's a tough time. I believe that this responsibility that we have as leaders is really important, and that will not be taken lightly by myself or my staff. We will try to do our best to be the best role models we can be all while pushing these young people to grow in who they are as humans, grow in who they are as competitors, and if will do all those things and we do them in a good way we will produce championships. We will hang some banners in our facility, and we will participate in some NCAA tournaments and if we continue to do that, who knows where we can take this thing. The right people are here. I believe in the leadership that is happening from Leon (Costello) and his staff. I believe their support in volleyball is going to allow us to accomplish the things that we want to accomplish. I'm really excited to be here and get a chance to get going."
