GAME DAY NOTEBOOK #4: Montana State Faces Explosive Eastern Washington without Jeffrey Manning Jr.

MSU visits Eastern's red turf for second straight year...
CHENEY, Washington – Montana State free safety Jeffrey Manning Jr. is out for today's game against Eastern Washington after a head injury suffered against Oregon State last week. The senior had started all 18 of his games since transferring from Oregon State in 2020.
In Manning's place, Tyson Pottenger makes his first start. A freshman from nearby Couer d'Alene, Idaho, Pottenger makes his first start today.
That is expected to be the only change to today's lineup against Eastern Washington.

Including specialists, five players from Washington enter today's game on MSU's depth chart: LT Rush Reimer (Camas), reserve RT Jacob Kettels (Lynden), WR Willie Patterson (Tacoma), LB Danny Uluilakepa (Puyallup), P Bryce Leighton (Camas), K Blake Glessner (Woodinville), and LS Tommy Sullivan (Everett).

With the Cats still without the top four running backs, quarterbacks Tommy Mellott and Sean Chambers have amped up the MSU run game. Mellott's 205 yards (5.3 per carry) leads the team, while Chambers' 185 net yards (8.0 per carry) is second. Chambers has scored seven rushing touchdowns, the most in the FCS.

Montana State is 3-12 all-time in Cheney, Washington, but has won twice since the Eagles installed red artificial turf.

In their most recent games combined against the Pac 12 schools from Oregon, MSU and EWU lost by a composite 132-48 score. The Cats fell at Oregon State 68-28, while EWU lost at Oregon 70-14 two weeks ago.

The Eagles are the second of three opponents playing MSU coming off its bye week. Morehead State, who played in week zero but took week one off, was the first. NAU is the third.
