GAME #4: Bobcats Open Big Sky Play at Eastern Washington Saturday

BOZEMAN, Montana - The college football calendar is filled with beginnings, and Montana State reaches a significant one Saturday when the Bobcats visit Eastern Washington.
Big Sky Conference play.
MSU (2-1 overall) and the Eagles (1-1) open league play at 2 pm MT on Saturday on Eastern Washington's red turf in a showdown between top 25 rivals. While EWU enters Saturday's game off its bye week, the Bobcats dropped a 68-28 decision at Oregon State last week.
The Bobcats remain thin at running back, with the team's top four shelved. That leaves the team turning to quarterbacks Tommy Mellott (5.3 yards per carry) and Sean Chambers (8.0) to fuel a run game that also utilizes the varied talents of a receiving core featuring Marqui Johnson, Willie Patterson and others.
"We had to get creative last week," said Bobcat coach Brent Vigen. "We'll continue to do some of those things as the situation dictates."
Senior quarterback Gunner Talkington leads the Eagles, throwing 217.5 yards per game. He also leads EWU with 41.0 rushing yards per contest. Micah Smith averages 24.0 rushing yards a game, while Freddie Roberson's 124 total receiving yards leads the team.
Stats piled up by talented Pac 12 offenses skew the defensive averages for Eastern and the Cats. The Eagles surrender 575.5 total yards and 49.5 points per game after falling to Oregon 70-14 in their most recent game, while MSU gives up 43.7 points and 465.7 yards an outing after last week's 68-28 loss at Oregon State.
Saturday's game marks the 62nd time in the program's Division I era that Montana State has faced a nationally ranked opponent while ranked itself. MSU is 33-28 in those games, including 3-5 against the Eagles.
