John Weidenaar, OT, 2012-15
ALL-TIME TEAM: None previously
HONORS: 1st Team All-America and 1st Team All-Big Sky in 2015, 3rd Team All-Big Sky in 2014
A CLOSER LOOK: John Weidenaar followed a unique path fto Bobcat Stadium, even if it wasn't a long one. The massive offensive tackle from Manhattan, Montana, is one of only seven Bobcat lettermen on record from that town just 15 miles west of Bozeman.
Here is the list (please note that MSU's letterman records are incomplete):
1897: Harry Patterson (MSU's first captain)
1900-03: Ed Kinney
1921-22: Bruce Hollister
1933-36: Alan Oliver
1935-38: Floyd Roth
1990-91: Matt Huffield
2011-15: John Weidenaar
Weidenaar is part of Montana State's amazing stable of left tackles. Members of this 125 Year Team from the Big Sky era that played left tackle for at least one full season for the Cats:Jon Borchardt, Mitch Brott, Lewis Kidd, Mike Person, Brent Swaggert, Joe Tiller and Weidenaar. Among those players, only Weidenaar blocked for at least two quarterbacks (DeNarius McGhee, Dakota Prukop) and at least three running backs (Cody Kirk, Shawn Johnson, Chad Newell) on the list.
Weidenaar anchored Montana State's offensive line for an era when the Bobcats put up video game offensive numbers. during Weidenaar's years. The team scored more than 400 points all three years, averaging 35.2 points and an astounding 202.8 rushing yards per game from 2012-15.
The strongest testimony to Weidenaar's toughness and resilience is that he started 49 consecutive games to set a new Bobcat record in both categories. Weidenaar is now second behind Mitch Brott on the consecutive and career starts list, and ahead of Brent Swaggert. If you buy into evaluating people on the company they keep, that's a pretty strong endorsement for all three.
FROM TEAMMATE DeNARIUS McGHEE: "Big, physical, and very athletic for a left tackle."
FROM TEAMMATE WEST WILSON: "John Weidenaar was a silent assasin. The only thing better than watching him pancake guys was the once a semester joke he'd make that always landed and brought the house down. I think he was 8/8 on jokes in college."
