Today starts the introduction of Montana State's Top 25 football players of all time as voted by nearly 500 fans...
Today we move our countdown into its final phase, the Top 25. These are the players, identified by our panel of long-time, passionate and knowledgeable Bobcats (Dean Alexander, Kris Atteberry, Butch Damberger, Dan Davies and Mike Kramer, with help from luminaries such as Chuck Karnop) and ranked by almost 500 Cat fans. There have been a few surprises along the way drawing reaction both positive and negative, which is part of why we do these sorts of things.
But the real reason for this exercise is to praise the men who built this program and on whose shoulders we all stand, and to nudge some who may not be considered all-time greats into the spotlight. Reno H. Sales and Fred Ervin are men who clearly and obviously couldn't play football at the FCS level were they transported to today, still deserve recognition a century-and-a-quarter after they left everything they had on a campus playing field that no one can even locate with complete certainty in 2022. Bringing recognition to players from bygone eras is worthwhile and important.
But anyone who's so much as taken a leisurely stroll past Bobcat Stadium knows the names that follow. Their names populate MSU records and honors lists, and the image of them playing is emblazoned in the collective memories of those who love Montana State football.
So here we go... the top 25 Bobcats of all-time!
