BOBCATS 125 - TOP 50: Lewis Kidd
7/23/2022 2:00:00 PM | Football
Lewis Kidd was a key cog in Montana State's dominant ground game and efficient passing attack for four years
We look at the 25 players that Bobcat fans and a blue ribbon panel of long-time MSU football observers ranked between 26th and 50th in the quest to determine the program's all-time players. In this segment of the countdown, players are listed alphabetically. You can find details here and a directory here.
Lewis Kidd, OG/OT, 2017-21
ALL-TIME TEAM: None previously
HONORS: 1st Team All-America and 1st Team All-Big Sky in 2021, 2nd Team All-Big Sky in 2019
A CLOSER LOOK: Things could have turned out vastly different.
In the early weeks and months of Lewis Kidd's college recruiting, the strapping defensive lineman from the Twin Cities liked the attention he was receiving from a traditional FCS power in Big Sky country and the Big Sky Conference. But it wasn't Montana State, is was the Bobcats' rival three hours to the northwest.
Then Jeff Choate became Montana State's head coach, and not long after a bomb dropped in Bozeman in the person of Ty Gregorak. Gregorak's success as an assistant coach - and recruiter - at UM was nearly legendary, so when he jumped to the Bobcats the news was shocking. And when Gregorak came to MSU, he brought with him a promising recuirt named Lewis Kidd.
Kidd redshirted as a defensive lineman in 2016 - he joked later that he was the only person in the program that didn't know he'd be moving to the offensive line - then made the change that would boost him to greatness. Once he joined the starting lineup in 2017, he never came out. Kidd played excellent football as a mobile, athletic guard through 2019, and when football resumed in 2021 after the pandemic he was asked to make another change. Sliding out from guard to left tackle helped solidify the Bobcat offensive line, and the team retained its stature as one of the best rushing programs in the FCS while producing one of the most efficient passing years in program history.
While Kidd was a 1st Team All-America as a senior, his legacy will always be his commitment to the MSU program and his status as a tremendous teammate and outstanding leader.
FROM FORMER BOBCAT HEAD COACH JEFF CHOATE: "A guy that was a four-year starter like a lot of the good seniors (in 2021), Lewis was the ultimate Bobcat, he and Derek Marks. I really feel like he's a special player. He gave six years to the Bobcat program and very few can say that. He gave total buy-in to how we were going to develop guys, he led by example, always swept the shed, showed the younger guys how to do things, always led by example. It's really cool to see him continue his playing career in the NFL."
