Lance McCutcheon's brilliant senior season stands as one of the most impactful in Bobcat history

HONORS: 1st Team All-Big Sky in 2021
A CLOSER LOOK: One way to view Lance McCutcheon's amazing senior season is as a breakout. The Bozeman High grad made jaw-dropping catch after mind-blowing catch on his way to a school record for receiving yards and receptions.
The other way to look at it is more nuanced. It takes some context.
McCutcheon's special season, which culminated in a trip to FCS National Championship game with his hometown team, came after three seasons waiting his turn. He played behind Mitchell Herbert and Kevin Kassis, who also had to wait their turn in the Bobcat receiver pecking order, and Travis Jonsen, a supreme athlete who came to MSU as a quarterback. He did it in the age of the transfer portal, and never complained. He set a standard for hard work that top-shelf programs always achieve.
But McCutcheon was never a one-hit wonder. He was a productive player throughout his career when he was on the field. He averaged over 16 yards a catch during his first three seasons, and finished with a school record 19.1 yards per catch. His 1,219 yards in 2021 is the most in a single season by a Bobcat, and his 1,741 career yards is 10th.
FROM FORMER BOBCAT HEAD COACH JEFF CHOATE: "Once he became the feature guy – he had to wait his turn, always option three, for two or three years had to wait his turn – he really stepped up. A four-year guy in the program, once he got the opportunity he maximized it. Honestly, Lance was a big receiver that didn't play big all the time, and he started doing that the results followed. He really had a tremendous senior season, and I'm happy for him and proud of him."
