Montana State's All-America center went on to a solid career in professional football
We're almost to the Top 50... that begins tomorrow. Today, though, we wrap up our segment of players in the 51-125 categore as we head into the 2022 season, the 125th anniversary of Montana State's first football team. You can find details here and a directory here.
Larry Rubens, C, 1978-81
ALL-TIME TEAM: None previously
HONORS: 1st Team All-America and 1st Team All-Big Sky in 1981
A CLOSER LOOK: Larry Rubens entered the starting lineup at center for the Bobcats as a sophomore and never left, holding down the center position throughout his career. He was undersized at 6-1 1/2, 230, but "intensity and desire are the main characteristics" that boosted the former Mead High (in Spokane) Panther to greatness, according to the school's 1980 Football Media Guide. The Cats averaged around 200 rushing yards per game during his career, as the program transitioned from Sonny Holland to Sonny Lubick. He earned 1st Team All-America and 1st Team All-Big Sky honors as a senior in 1980.
FROM VOICE OF THE CATS DEAN ALEXANDER: "Larry was a rock. An immovable object."
FROM LONG-TIME BOBCAT ASSISTANT COACH AND ANALYST DAN DAVIES: "Larry was the staple of the offensive line that was so effective in producing all those rushing yards back in the early '80s. He was very intelligent and powerful. Larry was a great leader on the field and in the weight room, and went on to have a nice run with Green Bay in the NFL and Memphis in the USFL."
