6/5/2022 2:00:00 PM | Football
An athletic interior lineman who played excellent football in the shadows of some of MSU's all-time great players
Leading to the 2022 season, the 125th anniversary of Montana State's first football team, we will look at 125 of the greatest Bobcats. You can find details here and a directory here.
Ray Sebestyen, DT, 2001-04
ALL-TIME TEAM: None previousl
HONORS: 1st Team All-Big Sky in 2003 and 2004, 2nd Team All-Big Sky in 2002
A CLOSER LOOK: Montana State's defenses in the first years of the 21st century were stacked with talents. Some of the program's transcendent stars - Kane Ioane, Roger Cooper, Adam Cordeiro, Jon Montoya - played in those years, piling up awards and leading the Cats back to football glory. But those teams also featured unsung heroes, stars that made tremendous contributions without all of the fanfare. Ray Sebestyen was one of those players, moving from end to tackle and starting for three years and helping the Cats win a league title in two of those. Sebestyen landed 2nd Team All-Big Sky honors in 2002 then snared 1st Team All-Big Sky honors in 2003 and 2004, In his three seasons starting he made 25.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage (our of 163 total) with 16 sacks. He forced seven fumbles in his career, including an incredible five in 2004 as a senior, tied for second-most in a season in school history.
FROM FORMER BOBCAT HEAD COACH MIKE KRAMER: "Top recruit for the great recruiting class of 2000 ...consistent high level of excellence...became an outstanding interior defensive lineman in a slender-type body... great hands, leverage, and escapability. ..able to slither off blocks...great in pursuit...always played at proper pad-level with exacting footwork...disciplined, tough, good in the weight room...leader on a team of leaders.
