Morgan Ryan Did it All in the Bobcat Secondary
Leading to the 2022 season, the 125th anniversary of Montana State's first football team, we will look at 125 of the greatest Bobcats. You can find details here and a directory here.
Morgan Ryan, S, 1990-93
ALL-TIME TEAM: 2000 Billings Gazette
HONORS: 1st Team All-Big Sky in 1993, Honorable Mention All-America and 2nd Team All-Big Sky in 1991,
A CLOSER LOOK: Morgan Ryan was the complete package as a safety. A brilliant center fielder who had more interceptions than any Bobcat in history, he was also a devestating hitter. A smart player who was praised for his leadership, he could also lock up a receiver in single coverage when the situation called for it. He was a fun player to watch, and helped pulll togther a defense that set the tone for Cliff Hysell's entire tenure at Montana State.
Ryan Intercepted eight passes in 1991, still the second-most in a season by a Bobcat, and grabbed six more in 1992.While he was patrolling the airwaves in the back end he was also among the team leaders in tackes each of his final three seasons, piling up 265 during his career, including six for a loss.
FROM BOBCAT SAFETY AND TEAM CAPTAIN SCOTT MATTHEWS: "What can I say about Morgan Ryan? He was the captain of our secondary and defense. He was the guy I looked to for how to play football at the college level. Sean Hill was more talented than Morgan, but Morgan was the best defensive player I ever played with. He could lock down a receiver in the slot position, cover in the open field as a safety, and tackle well in all situations. He was the best all around defensive player I ever played with. I think if Morgan got the opportunity he would have had a great career in the NFL."
