Devlan Geddes let his play do the talking during a brilliant Bobcat career
Leading to the 2022 season, the 125th anniversary of Montana State's first football team, we will look at 125 of the greatest Bobcats. You can find details here and a directory here.
Devlan Geddes, DE, 1993-96
ALL-TIME TEAM: None previously
HONORS: Honorable Mention All-America and 1st Team All-Big Sky in 1996, 2nd Team All-Big Sky in 1995, CoSIDA 1st Team Academic All-America in 1996
A CLOSER LOOK: So many names in Montana State's lineage of brilliant defensive ends come easily to mind, from Gary Gustafson and Brad Daws at the beginning to Daniel Hardy's amazing 2021 wrecking ball act. Tucked in th e middle, quiet and unassuming Devlan Geddes was one of the program's best.
Part of Cliff Hysell's first recruiting class at Montana State, Geddes moved into the starting lineup as a redshirt freshman in 1993 and never came out. He logged 51 tackles that season and forced two fumbles, getting 63 tackles with nine sacks and two other tackles-for-loss as a sophomore. He 11 tackles-for-loss in 1995 and 13 in 1996, ringing up six sacks each season.
Geddes earned 1st Team All-Big Sky and Honorable Mention All-America honors for his work as a senior. Always known for his intelligence, Geddes earned CoSIFA 1st Team Academic All-America honors in 1996, as well.
FROM FORMER BOBCAT DEFENSIVE LINE COACH BUTCH DAMBERGER: "We didn't know anything about Devlan and he sent video tape in, and when we watched him on film he ran all over the place. I remember a play in high school where a receiver caught a ball 15 or 20 yards downfield and made a cut back, and Devlan just drilled him. I thought, 'Where did he come from?' He was a wrestler and made his recruiting visit in the middle of wrestling season when he was cutting weight and he looked so skinny, sunken eyes, all that, but there was just something about him so we offered him. He's the smartest player I ever coached. You couldn't run screen on him or anything like that, he was so intelligent. He's one of the toughest kids I ever coached, too, and silent. He didn't say anything, he just lined up and played."
