'He looked like an egg' but played brilliant football in the middle of MSU's D-line
Leading to the 2022 season, the 125th anniversary of Montana State's first football team, we will look at 125 of the greatest Bobcats. You can find details here and a directory here.
Dan Ogden, DT, 2007-10
ALL-TIME TEAM: None previously
HONORS: 3rd Team All-America and 1st Team All-Big Sky in 2010, 1st Team All-Big Sky in 2009
A CLOSER LOOK: Dan Ogden's Bobcat career started with a roar, the other-worldly noise and swaying motion inside Texas A&M's Kyle Field during Montana State's 2007 season opener. Ogden entered MSU's first game under head coach Rob Ash, Ogden's college football debut, on redshirt alert. When one of MSU's interior defensive linemen was injured, "I grabbed Danny and said, there are more people in this stadium than in your home twon, aren't there?" former Bobcat defensive line coach Bo Beck recalls. "He said, 'Yes,' and their center beat Danny up pretty good and I thought I ruined him."
"The next week he played quite a bit, and he had a pick-6" against Dixie State, Beck continued. "After the game he told me, 'I'm done.' I said, 'What do you mean?' He said, I'm going to the NFL next week.'"
In his first eight days as a Bobcat Ogden had already established what most people remember about him - he's hilarious. Ogden's humor was surpassed only by his ability to make plays. In his four seasons as a Bobcat, the last three as a starter, he compiled 31 tackles-for-loss, including 17 sacks, with seven pass breakups and four quarterback hurries. He forced two fumbles.
FROM FORMER BOBCAT DEFENSIVE LINE COACH BO BECK: "I remember the first time I met Danny I thought, 'Who recruited this guy?' He looked like an egg. But Kane told me, 'This guy is pretty good.' He's the funniest guy I've been around, he's so damn funny. And a really good player."
