A look at the Grinnin' Greek, a Bobcat All-America lineman
Leading to the 2022 season, the 125th anniversary of Montana State's first football season, we will look at 125 of the greatest Bobcats. You can find details here.
Jim Argeris, C/G, 1952-55
ALL-TIME TEAM: None
HONORS: First Team All-America and All-Rocky Mountain Conference in 1954, 2nd Team All-Rocky Mountain Conference in 1955, 3rd Team All-Rocky Mountain Conference in 1953... Bobcat Athletics Hall of Fame (2011) and two-time team captain
A CLOSER LOOK: Dubbed the Grinnin' Greek for his ever-present smile, Jim Argeris was a great Bobcat lineman during an up-and-down period that laid the foundation for the greatest period of prolonged success in Montana State history. Argeris started in 1953 then elevated the next season as the Bobcats posted an 8-1 record, the program's best in more than a half-century. He earned 2nd Team All-Rocky Mountain Conference honors at center that year, and the next, when the Cats finished 4-4-1 in 1955, he landed on the NAIA All-America team in addition to earning First Team All-RMC kudos as a guard. How important was the 1954 season in the context of Bobcat football? That was the first 11 straight non-losing seasons, and 1954 through the 1984 season the Cats won 186 games, 36% of the program's all-time victories even now. The team's eight wins in 1954 marked the most in school history to that point, and during Argeris' time at Montana State the Cats posted records of 16-9-1 and won 12 of their 18 league games. Argeris was a two-time team captain, and also starred on the wrestling team.
1954 MONTANA STATE FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE: "A grinning scrapper who should shine this year."
FROM 1958 BOBCAT CAPTAIN DARRELL HUETH: "He was someone who all the older players really respected. He was recognized as a good player but especially as someone who the players really looked up to."
