Leon Potkay was an offensive line mainstay on Sonny Holland's first three teams
Leading to the 2022 season, the 125th anniversary of Montana State's first football season, we will look at 125 of the greatest Bobcats. You can find details here.
Leon Potkay, OG, 1970-73
ALL-TIME TEAM: None
HONORS: Honorable Mention All-America and 1st Team All-Big Sky in 1973, 2nd Team All-Big Sky in 1972
A CLOSER LOOK: Leon Potkay was a three-year starter on the Bobcat offensive line at a time when head coach Sonny Holland was molding his offense into the juggernaut it would become. In Potkay's three years as a starter - it's important to note that talent and stability stood as hallmarks of the program's offensive front - the Bobcats raised their rushing average from 167.9 in 1970, the year before his arrival as a starter (and Holland's as head coach) to 173.6 in 1971 to 234.0 in 1972 to 304.5 in 1973. Potkay was in the middle of that transformation as a starting guard. Potkay was part of the Great Lakes pipeline to Bozeman, a long list of great players from Pennsylvania and Ohio that began in earnest with players such as Dave Alt and Rocco Perciavalle and included all-time Bobcats like Joe Tiller and Bill Kollar. Potkay is also on the list, and has made Bozeman his home. On the family's long list of accomplishments are his sons' Curt and Sean outstanding athletic careers. Sean is presently the head coach of the Bozeman Bucks, the local American Legion team.
FROM FORMER GRIZZLY LINEBACKER AND BOBCAT ASSISTANT COACH GREG SALO: "Of all the guys I played against for the Bobcats I remember Leon. He was a very, very solid player, a very good offensive guard. From getting to know him when I was in Bozeman, Leon bleeds Blue and Gold."
